What is FTL?
FTL stands for “Full Truck Load,” meaning the truck is loaded with only one customer’s shipment. The shipper rents the entire truck’s loading space for the full truckload transport. Typically, this method is used for oversized shipments that require maximum capacity. The load remains in the same truck throughout the entire freight transport, from pickup to delivery.
Full truckloads are assigned to a shipper who uses the entire loading capacity for their transport. Since other companies cannot access the same full truckload on the corresponding route, there are no stops for other deliveries. Compared to less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments, this is a smoother and more cost-effective option for freight transport, suitable for long-distance transport of large, valuable cargo.
Amazon’s freight network, consisting of over 9,200 owned trailers and more than 10,000 reliable freight carriers as partners in the EU and the UK, allows you to choose the right carrier for your freight. Our drivers have exclusive access to our load board, making them available to shippers several weeks before the pickup date.
How it works
Full truckload is a cost-effective and efficient way to make use of truckload capacities. For faster, secure shipping, you can fill a shipping vehicle near-to or at capacity. Not only does this remove other pickups, it also eliminates transfer during transit.
When you book with us, you’ll receive transparency around truck capacity that helps you reduce empty miles and idle time — while we automatically book loads to suit your needs.
How many pallets fit in a full truckload?
Pallet shipping is a way to safely store your freight units together in a full truckload for sensitive, time-critical deliveries. You can use the entire truck’s loading capacity. For fragile cargo, you can typically accommodate between 24 and 30 pallets, with the maximum weight of a full truckload being 20,000 kg.
LTL vs. FTL shipping
Since the size and desired speed of shipments can be very different from FTL, less-than-truckload shipment rates are often lower. While FTL shipments use most of the truck, if not more, LTL only requires you to pay for the space you use. FTL is also the faster option, with no interruptions from other shippers’ pickups and drop-offs. How much does it cost to ship a full truckload?
Since FTL requires a dedicated truck to transport the entire shipment, full truckload shipping rates tend to be more costly than LTL shipping.
Although this provides more protection for the cargo, it also uses larger and more expensive trailers than LTL. These extra costs are then passed on to the shipper at higher rates.
