How Amazon Rail Helped a Small Company from Dusseldorf Reach Customers Across Europe

The Düsseldorf-based company Mameido and thousands of other German SMEs rely on Amazon Logistics. Find out why here.

Sarah, Benjamin, Matthias, Moreno and Stefan from Düsseldorf have always wanted to design minimalistically aesthetic water bottles and cups that people all over the world drink from. When the five friends founded their company Mameido, they decided they wanted to focus on products and design, while Amazon should worry about how their bottles and cups get to customers. But not only Mameido, but also over 47,500 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) throughout Germany rely on us and generated 4.75 billion euros in turnover through Europe-wide sales in 2022.

So that these small entrepreneurs can reach customers across Europe, we are constantly expanding our logistics network by using less CO2-intensive means of transport, such as rail transport.

Drinking bottles and coffee mugs are an everyday companion for many. Through our unique design, we want to inspire people and simply make them happy,” says Sarah, co-founder of Mameido. “Amazon enabled us to grow steadily. We now sell our products all over Europe.”

Amazon and SMEs — A Success Story

Independent sales partners such as Mameido account for 60% of products sold on Amazon. These are primarily SMEs that sell their products on Amazon in order to reach new customers outside their home countries. We want to ensure that customers across Europe can choose from a wide range of products, including Mameido’s stylish water bottles, which should be delivered quickly and reliably. That is why we analyse which articles are ordered most frequently so that the products are stored closer to the respective delivery locations. We are increasingly using rail transport to transport inventory between our locations.

“We are proud to support companies that want to reach new customers worldwide. In 2023, Amazon will transport more than 35,000 truckloads of products from SMEs like Mameido between our locations in Europe via freight trains, saving thousands of tons of CO2,” says Benoit Robinot-Bertrand, EU Surface Transportation Director.

Our rail network is based on partnerships with European logisticians in the rail freight sector. Thanks to partners such as CargoBeamer, we currently transport our products over more than 100 routes.

“We are proud that Amazon frequently uses our services to transport trailers by rail in an environmentally friendly way,” says Nicolas Albrecht, CEO of CargoBeamer. “At CargoBeamer, we are committed to decarbonizing logistics across Europe by offering high-speed rail connections for all types of trailers and look forward to transporting many more Amazon trailers on our trains in the future.”

Mameido’s products leave one of our fulfillment centers in Düsseldorf and travel from there to Kaldenkirchen, where they are loaded onto a freight train to Domodossola near Milan, and finally arrive at an Italian Amazon fulfillment center. Rail is an efficient means of transport when it comes to moving goods over long distances, because trailers do not travel so long distances on any other route. This not only saves CO2 on the roads, but also reduces travel times.
