Pallet shipping in Germany is an efficient way for logistics companies and sellers to ship palletized cargo easily and safely. There are two main options to choose from: shipping with the europallet or shipping with the standard pallet. EU freight forwarders, such as Amazon Freight, use this to deliver goods safely to their destination.
Why is it important to know the differences in pallet shipping? Ultimately, if you know the size of the pallets for your freight shipment, it is easier to determine how much goods fit in a load. This also allows you to consider which pallets have the right dimensions for the size of the packaging of your cargo.
In this article, we look at the differences between Euro Pallets and standard pallets, examining the size differences, prices and special features that you need to pay attention to during packing and transport.
What is included in pallet shipping in Germany?
Pallet shipping is particularly common for FTL (Full truck load) and LTL (Less-than-truckload) freight transportation. This includes the delivery of freight on wooden or plastic pallets in Germany, as well as across countries within Europe and beyond.
Each country has fixed regulations on the size of pallets to transport cargo easily and safely. For freight leaving Germany, for example, you should check whether the recipient country has different regulations regarding the dimensions of pallets.
Euro Pallets and standard pallets both allow you to safely pack several items together. Straps or stretch film are used to hold the items together in a delivery and protect them during transport.
As a shipper, you can use pallet distribution networks to save costs and create an efficient delivery process. Through an Amazon fulfillment center (FC), you can safely ship palletized cargo across our network.
What is a Euro Pallet?
A Euro Pallet is a flat wooden transport pallet from the Europool exchange system, which is marked according to the EN 13698-1 standard. It is manufactured by four different brands: World, EPAL, Chep, and LPR. Provided it has not been damaged, this pallet is reusable.
Each pallet receives a country label for the country in which it is used, as well as a label from the manufacturer. Common pallet types include block pallet, skid pallet, closed deck pallet and overhang pallet. Typically they are made from wood but there are also others made from recycled plastic. Every pallet must comply with the IPPC / ISPM 15 guidelines.
What are the dimensions of a Euro Pallet?
Each Euro Pallet measures 120 cm long x 80 cm wide x 14.4 cm high and 0.96 square meters of area, and these dimensions are recognised across the continent. It complies with the regulations of the European Pallet Association (EPAL), is recognized by ISO, UIC standardized and has a dead weight of 20 to 24 kilograms.
The material of a Euro pallet consists of one of 17 specified types of wood. It consists of 11 boards and 9 blocks, which are marked with the manufacturer’s mark (e.g. EPAL). Euro Pallets can be lifted and transported from all four sides by forklifts and pallet trucks.

What is a standard pallet?
A standard pallet has the same function as a Euro Pallet, except its dimensions are different. Standard pallets can be light, medium, or heavy in weight. They are made of wood or other materials, and can be booked with or without a closed deck.
What is the size of a standard pallet?
The dimensions of the standard pallet correspond to the UK size specifications of 100cm x 120cm x 14.4cm. Amazon Freight recommends standard pallets for many shipments, especially if you are shipping to England, North America, or Central America.
Standard pallets are particularly suitable for freight shipping and large containers that are 1.85 m² or 3.72 m².

Advantages of shipping with palletized cargo
Regardless of whether you choose to ship with a Euro Pallet or a standard pallet, both offer the following benefits:
1. Cost effective
The long service life of pallets makes them very cost-effective as a means of transport. Plastic pallets last up to ten years. Wooden pallets can be repaired and are therefore also a cheap option.
2. High quality
The high quality of the wooden pallets and plastic pallets, whose dimensions and materials are standardized according to German and European standards, promises a safe delivery of goods. Even heavy goods can be transported safely on the pallets. The robust material is also weather-resistant and durable.
3. Standard sizes
Because Euro and standard pallets are standardized and have fixed dimensions, they fit exactly into the standard packaging sizes of beverage crates, cartons and crates.
4. Pallet exchange
Amazon Freight offers pallet exchange, where shippers can swap pallets with a distribution centre or warehouse for reuse. Since the regular collection and delivery of pallets poses complex logistical problems for those managing warehouses and supply chains, this exchange program saves time and makes processes more efficient.
