The number of electric delivery vans from Rivian in Germany was also doubled.
The electrification of Amazon’s transport network continues to gain momentum; the more than 200 new eActros 600 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Trucks, which will be used in Europe from this year, are an important step on the road to a CO2-neutral future. More than 140 of the new e-trucks are being used in Great Britain and more than 50 in Germany, in addition to the 38 e-trucks that have already been on European roads since the end of 2024. In addition, the number of electric delivery vans from Rivian in Germany was doubled to more than 600 — and new micromobility centers were opened for delivery with electric bicycles.
The new electric trucks will be used for mid-mile trips, i.e. between logistics centers and distribution centers in urban areas. In Germany alone, the new e-trucks are expected to transport more than 100 million parcels per year.
Emission-free long-haul travel: The eActros 600 from Mercedes-Benz Trucks
By choosing the eActros 600, Amazon is relying on a vehicle that has a battery capacity of more than 600 kilowatt hours and has a range of up to 500 kilometers without an intermediate charge.
Efficient infrastructure crucial for electrification
To ensure that the new electric trucks are used reliably, Amazon continues to invest in the charging infrastructure. This is a decisive factor for getting more electric commercial vehicles on Europe’s roads. Amazon will therefore install hundreds of fast charging stations at its European locations, which will be able to charge the 40-ton trucks from 20 to 80 percent in just over an hour.
“The order for more than 200 electric trucks underscores our ambition to play a leading role in electrifying our logistics network in Europe,” says Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Worldwide Operations Sustainability. “This is the largest order of electric trucks from Amazon worldwide to date and is a decisive step on the way to meeting our Climate Pledge of being CO2-neutral in all our business areas by 2040. ”
Karin Rådström, Chief Executive Officer of Daimler Truck Holding AG, says: “We are delighted that Amazon has chosen the eActros 600 — the new standard for sustainable transport — as a pioneer in the transformation towards alternative drives. Our eActros 600 is a powerful alternative to a diesel truck — thanks to its range of 500 kilometers on a single battery charge. With its very high energy efficiency, the eActros 600 will also be profitable for fleet operators. ”
Logistik für eine CO2-neutrale Zukunft
- The major contract is part of our Climate Pledge to work CO2-neutrally in all areas of business by 2040. To achieve this goal, we are continuing to invest in the electrification of our transportation network. In 2024, the number of Rivian electric delivery vans used in the Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf area was doubled to more than 600. By the end of this year, we want to increase the number of electric delivery vehicles in Europe to 10,000 units.
In addition, by the end of 2024, more than 60 micromobility centers were already in operation in over 45 European cities. From there, deliveries are carried out in densely populated city centers using electric cargo bikes. In Germany, there are micromobility centers in the five largest cities: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt. Amazon’s delivery partners also use the e-cargo bikes in Freiburg, Aachen, Koblenz and Essen. In this way, we are getting closer to our goal of a CO2-neutral future with every delivery.
